What is Windows Mobile?Windows Mobile is best described as a subset of platforms based on a Windows CE underpinning. Currently, Pocket PC (now called Windows Mobile for Pocket PC),Smartphone, and PocketPC Phone Edition are the three main platforms under the Windows Mobile Umbrella. Each platform utilizes different components of Windows CE, as well as supplemental features and applications suited for their respective devices.
What Devices support Oulook Mobile? The good news is that once the technology started maturing the major mobile phone vendors such as Nokia, Motorolla and Orange all started offering Windows CE powered devices. Today you would be hard pushed to find a vendor that does not provide a Windows Mobile device as Windows devices start to dominate the market. In addition to this Microsoft licensed its Exchange Active Sync application to be used on other operating systems such as Symbian. If you don't have a Microsoft Windows CE powered device today you more than likley running a device that is running the Symbian OS. This now means that there is a huge number of devices that are available in the market place that can connect to our Outlook Mobile service.
Which Device is Right for Me? As mentioned earlier there are three main Windows Mobile platforms, these are Windows Mobile for PocketPC, Windows Mobile Smartphone and Windows Mobile PocketPC Phone Edition. The current revision of Windows Mobile is version 5.0 but version 6.0 is on its way very shortly with even more features and functionality. It is extremely important that you make the correct decision when selecting a device as the devices offer different functionality. When choosing a device make sure you make a list of features that you see as a must, for example if you want to use your device mainly for email then make sure you purchase a device that enables you to email quickly and that has a keyboard or a touch screen where you can enter your email using a stylus. In this example you would require either a Pocket PC or a PocketPC Phone Edition as a Smartphone looks just like a normal mobile phone and only has a small keypad. Unless you are extremely good at texting trying to write an email on these devices is very frustrating indeed. On the other hand if you want a small device that will fit nicely into your pocket and only really want to be able to read email while on the go a Smartphone could be for you.
Windows Mobile Pocket PC
The PocketPC device is the most powerful of devices but does not have the ability to make phone calls. The PocketPC is really just a PDA (Personal Digitial Assistant).Pocket PCs come with mobile versions of Office applications in addition to Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile. Though there are different Pocket PCs, many come with Wi-Fi to enable you to connect to the Internet when you are in a wireless hotspot. Wireless Hotspots are areas that enable you to connect to the internet. For example most coffee shops today will have a wireless hotspot available, therefore if your device is equipped with WiFi it should automatically detect this and enable you to easily connect to the internet and synchronise with your Exchange 2007 mailbox. With a Pocket PC, you'll be able to use Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile and browse the Internet if you are in a wireless hotspot. If you dont have access to a wireless hotspot you can still synchronise with your Exchange 2007 mailbox by cradling your device with your desktop computer and synchronising via a cable as opposed to wireless.
Many places provide you with free internet access via their hotspot in return for your custom, however there are also a number of places that require you to pay for this access such as at some airports.
Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition
You can do everything with a Pocket PC Phone that you can do with a Pocket PC with the addition of wireless access to the Internet and cellular phone capabilities. If you have a Pocket PC Phone, you can access the Internet through your wireless connection—you won’t need to find a wireless hotspot. In addition to this a lot of devices also have WiFi and therefore you have the best of both worlds. When you are in a free wireless hotspot area you can save your phone bill by synchronising with your Exchange mailbox over WiFi as opposed to over the cellular network and it wont cost you a penny. Another thing to consider when making a decision on which device to purchase is the fact that Pocket PC devices all have a touch screen which enables you to easily compose emails by utilsing a stylus. Most Pocket PC devices also have a good quality keyboard with some devices employing a slide out keyboard mechanism which also enables you to easliy compose emails or type Word Documents
Internet access over your normal cellular connection incurs data charges from your wireless provider
